Walking Tour of the South Slope
Bricks & Brushes Walking Tour with Art
Tour Length: 1.5 miles and 90-120 minutes
including 2 or 3 seated rest breaks.
Tour Guide: Alyssa Fridgen, Art Curator
Explore structures and sites in South Slope and surrounding neighborhoods through first-hand
accounts by people who lived and traveled there. Listen to the words penned in letters, family
papers, manuscripts, and contemporary essays, as well as Lenape oral histories illuminating
personal experiences in what is now South Brooklyn. See images of newspaper clippings and
photographs from Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper articles, Brooklyn CORE (Congress of Racial
Equality) ephemera, and other primary sources offering a glimpse of South Slope at various points
in time. Inspired by Betty Smith’s semi-autobiographical novel, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” this
tour will shine a light on everyday residents and their daily habitats through their own words and
images. Accessibility The walk will primarily be via sidewalks and walkways.
The walk is approximately 1-1.2 miles walking, approximately 90-120 minutes, and includes some hills. There will be seating available at 2-3 stops on the tour.
Alyssa Fridgen is an independent curator and art historian based in Kensington, Brooklyn.
Previously Curator of Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and Alexandria Museum of Art, and
Programs Co-Chair and Vice President of the Board at Art for Change in East Harlem,
she received a national curatorial award for the exhibition “Immersive Space” and honorable
mention for “Unraveling Time, Creative Space” from the American Alliance of Museums.
The cost of this tour is $10 and is non-refundable.
Please pay with a credit card when you register.
