Global Volunteerism and the Peace Corps
Are you looking to make your retirement more meaningful and adventurous? After more than 35 years of teaching Sociology in the U.S. and internationally, I realized it was time to put into practice what I had long taught in the classroom. That decision led me to join the Peace Corps and serve in the Philippines from 2024 to 2025.
In this talk, I will share my experiences living and working alongside local communities, supporting a school, and immersing myself in a new culture. I will also reflect on how this journey transformed my perspectives on connection, service, and life.
This experience affirmed that we are deeply interconnected, and that serving communities-wherever they may be-can be one of the most fulfilling and enriching (but not easy) paths, especially in retirement.
Sunghee Nam, is a member of Good Neighbors of Park Slope and we are looking forward to hearing about this experience.
