Walking Tour: Bush Terminal Park

About this event

Walking Tour of Bush Terminal Park
by the NYC Park Rangers
Friday, October 3 from Noon-1:30PM
In Person

This tour will feature a history of Bush Terminal's unique, INFLUENTIAL role in shaping the shipping
industry in America for decades.

IT WAS AN ABANDONED BROWNFIELD FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS, UNTIL SUNSET PARK RESIDENTS BEGAN URGING THE CITY TO CONSTRUCT A WATERFRONT PARK THERE.  THE PARKS DEPARTMENT TOOK IT OVER AND TRANSFORMED THE SPACE INTO AN IMPRESSIVE, UNUSUAL, NATURALLY LANDSCAPED AND BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED PUBLIC PARK.  WE'LL EXPLORE THE WATERFRONT SITE FEATURING SALTWATER TIDE POOLS AND RESTORED WETLANDS.  ITS MANY LARGE PIERS OFFER MAGNIFICENT VIEWS OF NEW YORK HARBOR AND SKYLINES, AS WELL AS STATEN ISLAND AND THE NEW JERSEY SHORELINE.  WITH THE RANGERS' LARGE TELESCOPES, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE FOR MILES IN EACH DIRECTION.

OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN 2014, BUSH TERMINAL PARK IS A NEWER ADDITION TO BROOKLYN'S WATERFRONT.  iT'S TUCKED BEHIND A STRETCH OF OLD INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS IN SUNSET PARK, BETWEEN 43rd AND 51st STREETS, WEST OF FIRST AVENUE.  IT WAS USED AS A FREIGHT YARD BEFORE DECADES OF ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP AND PLANNING TRANSFORMED THE 24-ACRE SPACE INTO A PEACEFUL PUBLIC SPACE, WITH A FOCUS ON BOTH NATURE AND RECREATION.  VISITORS CAN WALK ITS WATERFRONT PATH ALONG THE EDGE OF THE HARBOR, WHILE SEEING PASSING SHIPS, THE STATUE OF LIBERTY, AND MANY SKYSCRAPERS.  MUCH OF THE LANDSCAPING RESTORED THE NATURAL SHORELINE AND PROTECTS AGAINST STORM DAMAGE WITH SALT-TOLERANT PLANS AND PATHWAYS THAT MANAGE WATER FLOW AND EROSION.

Parking is available and we will send more information to registrants closer to the tour date.
This tour is free to members of Good Neighbors of Park Slope.
