NYC Composting -- It’s Complicated.
The December Meeting of the Climate Change Interest Group offers a special presentation on composting programs in the City.
Curbside Composting: We’ve heard a lot of rumors. Are Brooklyn food scraps being turned into biogas (methane)? Compost for fertilizer? Or are they being burned, or buried in landfill to release planet warming gasses? An expert from Big Reuse will explain what actually happens to the food scraps collected in the City’s mandated program.
Curbside composting is mandatory. Will buildings that fail to participate be fined? We will offer suggestions about how to help your building comply with the program.
Community Composting: How is community composting different from the City’s curbside composting? Funding for community composting was cut this summer, but some has been restored. Find out what is happening now and how you can participate in this form of food scrap recycling.
NYC Smart Compost Bins: Green or orange bins are located throughout the city. Learn the differences between the green and orange bins, how to use them, and what happens to the food scraps collected there.
Guest Speaker: Elena Tinschert from Big Reuse
